The Baltic Amber Road
The tourist route “The Baltic Amber Road” gives a possibility for tourists and travellers to get acquainted with the being of the being of the amber in Lithuania, Latvia and Kaliningrad region, covering its history, output, processing and jewelry. The route stretches for 418 km along the Baltic coast introducing various information and objects of “Amber Route”, gathered in different countries.
 
1 day. Arrival at Vilnius. Ride to Klaipėda – Lithuania’s third biggest city, standing on the meeting place of Curonian Bay and Baltic Sea and a big, ice-free harbor. Settling in at the hotel. Cognitive trip through Klaipėda’s old town – a place of exceptional fachwerkal architecture style and planned streets’ structure. Excursion through St. Virgin’s Peace Queen’s church, Danė’s bund – Meridian, memorial to Simonas Dachas, Artists’ House courtyard, theater’s square, clocks’ museum, Lithuania’s sea museum.

2 day. Breakfast. Journey to Venstpilis (Latvia). First steps on the “Trail of Amber.” Excursion through Venstpilis museum, which is established in Livonia’s order’s castle – the museum holds several archeological amber relics. Then a trip to amber dropping place at Pavilostoje. It is a place where sea, on occasion of stronger wind, drops big portions of this Baltic gold, which you will have an opportunity to collect along with local amber collectors. Liepaja’s unique objects – world’s longest amber necklace (123 meters long) and 4 meters high amber sun clock, both made by local residents.

3 day. Breakfast. Journey to Šventoji and a trip to ritual pagan cult place – Samogitians’ ‘alkas.’ It was at this place that ancient Lithuanians would gather and offer amber dust to the Gods. Later on, journey continues to Palanga, which is richest with “Amber Way’s” sights: demonstrational amber manufacture, the treasure of Šventoji, the museum of Antanas Montis and the treasure of the city Palanga – amber museum which is situated in spacious count Tiškevičius manor house, containing 4500 pieces of amber work. A visit to the main amber collection place – Karklė. There you will also be told about amber history, morphology, properties and inclusions. For the end of the day – archeological amber findings in the Lesser Lithuania’s history museum in Klaipėda.

4 day. Breakfast.Oneday excursion to Curonian Spit, visiting a resort of European level, Juodkrantė, on the way. From 1860 to 1890 output of amber in this area reached about 75 thousand kg on average; the area is also famous for valuable prehistorical items, which are displayed on various museums and exhibits. Later on – a trip to Nida, biggest settlement on the Curonian Spit. In Nida, excursion to Mizgiriai amber gallery-museum, where exhibits, that have been collected for 20 years, are held. A demonstration on how unique amber art is made. Free time. Continued excursion to Nida’s lighthouse, Parnadžio dune and sun clock – calendar, old fishermans’ ethnographic homesteads, Neringa’s history museum, Thomas Mannas Cultural center.

5 day. Breakfast. Journey to a settlement in Kaliningradas region (Russia) – Jantarnyj. Excursion to see industrial amber quarries and amber layers, untouched by geological processes. Here operates the sole plant in the world, that performs amber’s extraction and processing on industrial scale. Trip to amber processing complex: “Amber Lagoon” and amber pyramind. For the end of the trip – Kaliningradas amber museum and amber cabin in the ship “Vitiaz” It is the only chance to see second in size amber specimen and other amber exhibits, brought here from 34 places of our planet.
